G-Lane and D.J. Smallz: Everything that is NOW in Hip-Hop
“United We Ball, Divided We Fall”, says Young S.O.S., one of the standout stars of the Baton Rouge, LA based G-Lane Hip-Hop super-group who burst onto the entertainment scene last year with supporting roles in the Trill Ent. cult classic "Ghetto Stories the Movie" last year, and a starring role in the very controversial movie "Thuggin It and Lovin It 2". Taking on the task of being a hitman for higher in a film starring Baton Rouge powerhouses Lil Boosie and Webbie while simultaneously guiding you through one of the most notorious neighborhoods in the city of Baton Rouge was not the beginning of S.O.S. or the G-Lane’s history as entertainers, but it does make you wonder, WHAT WILL THESE GUYS DO NEXT?!
Growing up on the outskirts of Baton Rouge, Gardere Lane is a neighborhood once known only for it’s poverty, unbelievable crime rate and police presence, as well as a staggering lack of education and opportunity. “A lot of kids have the luxury of not facing the harsh realities of life at an early age, but G-Lane is known as one of the hardest places to grow-up so you’re born a survivor. Our music tells you a story of struggle, hustle, self-motivation, and teamwork. Many people lack these experiences in their childhood, so they lack these qualities in their adulthood at a time in America where these qualities are becoming more necessary.” says Young S.O.S. when asked about his view on the mission of the G-Lane brand of entertainment.
G-Lane as a rap group started in 2002 when Young S.O.S. received music equipment for his 16th birthday and began recording with several local rappers around the neighborhood including his then 21 year old brother Hannibal. Hannibal who was already signed to an underground record label decided to take his career in his own hands and traveled to Orlando, FL in 2001 to pursue music full-time at Full-Sail Real World Education. After his return home he found S.O.S. along with several of his neighborhood friends were really developing into a super group. Local superstar and self-proclaimed “Gardere Lane General” BluBlack (known regionally for producing and rapping on the Baton Rouge Anthem “Out Da Box”, as well as becoming one of the most recognizable faces in Baton Rouge with his infamous blue dreads) alongside Young Sims ( Most known for producing on Webbie‘s Savage Life 2 , as well as countless other local Baton Rouge artists) carry the major workloads on the production team. With over 20 different rap artists on the roster featuring Mystikal’s younger brother Reese, Young True aka “YALP!”, Yung Yola, Classik, Reese , Obeeze, Needy Nee, Pezie Boy, Beezy Bird, Kidd, D.$.G, and many others, the group claims they have the freshest sound in the game right now. “We‘re more like a rock band than a rap group. We‘ve been jamming together for years, living life and making music, now it‘s time to show people what we‘re made of.” claims S.O.S.“ Even though Hannibal and I are the brains behind the Black Noise/ G-Lane movement, we recognize that as a team you’re only as strong as your weakest link and our biggest asset is the strong bond we have between our artists, and the overall talent and history each individual posesses is priceless.”
After terrorizing the local rap scene in Baton Rouge for years, the members of G-Lane have done it all. From dominating the local radio, television commercials, clubs, to producing there own videos, tv shows and documentaries as well as providing these services for other local artists around the city, the G-Lane feels they are more than ready for the big stage. “All we need is a major opportunity at this point. It takes pure negligence or hate to not recognize us as the future or Hip-Hop. All you have to do is take one good look at what we’ve done in the past ten years not just as artists but as actual people in the real world, and you’ll find that no one compares to our movement. It’s not even close! We’ve built this thing from the ground up, and our grind speaks for itself. We’ve done everything you can do without a major label backing us, so once someone sheds the light on this fact, they’ll realize soon that they’ve stumbled upon a goldmine of talent which seems to be absent in the rap game now.
Currently gearing up for their first nationwide mixtape Black Noise Presents G-Lane: Back to Business, hosted by DJ Smallz, the world renowned mixtape DJ known for his incredibly popular Southern Smoke mixtape series as well as the very popular djsmallz.com, which was ranked as one of the most influential hip-hop websites on the planet by XXL, the G-Lane Members are confident that this combination will go down as one of the most classic debut mixtapes of all time. “We chose DJ Smallz for this mixtape because he has a reputation of making history in Southern Hip-Hop. At the end of the day we’ll always choose a person’s history over their hype and we hold ourselves to the same standard which in my opinion is the only way to be successful in life.” Says S.O.S. “We’re coming out with the mixtape and the DVD simultaneously and we’re hoping no one sleeps on us like they have in the past. We as artists have always held a reputation for being ahead of our time and this CD is a prime example of this fact because not only does it display the talents of the G-Lane with hit singles, street anthems, and club bangers, but it also introduces you to almost the entire local rap scene of Baton Rouge with features from underground heavyweights Level, Young Ready, Big Head, Q-Red on the track, Mouse on the Track, Supa (formerly of Down Bad), A.R., and world-famous soul singer Tyree Neal. We picked our favorite artists from the city to create new opportunities for everyone and to show the world that even though we love our hood and represent it to the fullest, we respect everybody and we do this for the people.” Hopefully, this will be everything they expect and more.
